Travel Guidelines To Sipadan Island

Sipadan Island, one of the world’s famous diving paradises, is located off the coast of East Malaysia. It rises about 600 meters from the seabed and is also strategically placed in the heart of the Indo-Pacific Ocean, home of the richest aquatic habitats in the entire world. The legendary diving heaven is said to house more than 3,000 species of marine life and recorded hundreds of coral species in its ecosystem.

The Best Diving Spots
As many as nine established dive spots can be found in Sipadan Island. These spots are named after the captivating encounters divers had such as the Hanging Garden, Barracuda point, White-tip Avenue, Coral Garden and Turtle Patch. The most popular diving spot is Barracuda point where divers normally come across a big school of barracudas swimming around the area.

The Best Time to Visit and Dive

Malaysia is blessed with a unique climate, boasting an all year-round sun ranging from 21ÚC to 32ÚC with the humidity of 85-95%. Rainy season can be expected between November and February with annual recorded rainfalls around 2,000mm to 2,500mm.

Limited Dives per day
Since Sipadan Island has been issued as a protected island by the Malaysian government in 2004 as an act to preserve the ecology and protect the wildlife, only 120 dives are allowed each day. The dives are distributed evenly between the 12 resorts in Mabul and Kapalai for their visitors.

Accommodation
Accommodations can be found on Mabul and Kapalai Island and divers will be ferried to the diving spots by resort operators daily. The resorts offers water bungalows and wooden duplex chalets, both equipped with air-conditioning, hot/cold shower, ceiling fans, private balcony with panoramic sea view, satellite TV, mini bar and fly screens in each unit.

Electricity Supply
The resorts provide a 24-hour a day power supply, using 3 pin rectangular plugs similar to British plugs.

Currency
All purchase and trades are in Malaysian Ringgit (RM). Money changers can be found at the airport and Semporna with VISA and MasterCard accepted in all resort. There are no ATM machines provided at the resort.

Other Attraction
4 hours by land transportation from Semporna to Sukau Rainforest Lodge, changing from blue sea and hot sun to rainforest green and fresh air. Hop on the Kinabatangan river cruise and enjoy watching some primate species hanging on treetops.
